Maintaining a sexual relationship with a child

This offence refers to a relationship between an adult and a child where there was more than one unlawful sexual act over a period of time.

It’s one of the most serious sex offences and carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.

Under Queensland law, a child is any person under the age of 16 years.

Any sexual or indecent act involving or directed at a person under 16 years of age is unlawful.

Usually, the prosecution must specify the details of all alleged unlawful acts to support the charge. However, this is not required for this offence.

It is quite common for these charges to be accompanied by other sexual offences such as indecent treatment or rape.
